History

Colegio Verdad y Vida(CVV) was initially intended to provide a safe, Christ-centered educational environment for the children at Casa Vida y Esperanza. The poor academic quality and unhealthy social interactions within the Mexican public schools along with the trauma backgrounds of the children, created a need for a more therapeutic and holistic learning environment. In 2008 we began with a handful of the most academically-challenged students from CVE in an informal special needs type classroom with one full-time teacher. In 2009, a total of 15 CVE students were enrolled in a community-sponsored school program known as CONAFE, the first step into a more structured on-site education system. The following year, all CVE students plus a handful of children from Magdalena were enrolled in the CONAFE program, with 6 full-time instructors. As the years passed, it became clear that an autonomous, government-certified private school was critical to ensure that Christian teachings and high academic standards would be consistently maintained. Additionally, a private academy would open doors for Gospel ministry and outreach to more children from Magdalena. After a timely God-orchestrated meeting with some well-connected local elected officials, the middle school was certified under CVE's legal charter in 2014, followed by the elementary school in 2015. With the contributions and labor of HarvestCall donors and volunteers, along with our 19 dedicated staff, and more interest from the families of Magdalena than ever before, Colegio Verdad y Vida is set up with room to grow with a science lab, computer lab, athletic facilities, and classrooms for over 100 students.

Education Standards

We are a fully-certified private school in Mexico, officially incorporated in 2015-2016 into the Mexican "Department of Education" in the state of Sonora, MX, complying with all government regulations. All our teaching staff are licensed teachers, using the state-approved standard curriculum.

We have purposefully committed to offering the following services to our students:
  1. Daily devotional lessons to speak the truth of Christ to our students
  2. Maximum class size of 10 students to facilitate personalized attention to each student and meet special education needs effectively
  3. Twice daily recesses for physical and emotional health
  4. Daily physical education classes in elementary school
  5. Nutritious snacks served twice daily
  6. Life skills training in junior high and high school
  7. Daily English instruction in junior high and elementary school
  8. As needed individualized educational intervention with tutors and teachers

Statistics

As of May 2019, there are:
  • 36 students in grades 1-6
  • 19 students in grades 7-9
  • 4 students in our high school program
  • 17 full-time staff members, including directors, teachers, and tutors, 15 of which are Mexican nationals
In 2017, the last year our school was evaluated as part of the national standardized testing program, our junior high students placed first in our zone in both mathematics and Spanish, and 16th and 26th respectively in the state of Sonora(out of hundreds of public and private schools).

Testimony

"Edwin enrolled in 3rd grade at CVV in August 2018. He was academically lagging, insecure, and unmotivated. He still sounded out words rather than read them. With the help of his teachers, tutor, and principle, he has almost caught up with his classmates, manages his emotions, and feels more confident about himself and his peers. He is motivated to learn and is actually enthusiastic about reading, history, and English. He no longer fears mistakes and willingly asks to help."
-Gladys, CVV 1st grade teacher and mother of Edwin(grade 3)

(As of January 2018, Edwin was attending weekly counseling sessions with a local psychologist for emotional and speech therapy, who recommended that he attend a school more suited to his needs. Since being enrolled at CVV in August 2018, the same psychologist gradually reduced his sessions to biweekly, then monthly, and finally, as of June 17, 2018, released Edwin completely.)

Support Needed

All building maintenance, utility expenses, new construction, legal compliance, safety protocols, educational materials, textbooks, teacher salaries, and transportation costs are funded through Casa Vida y Esperanza and Child Sponsorship. Due to our ongoing commitment to offer our services to the families in Magdalena who most need and benefit from our program, we are unable to collect more than a symbolic tuition contribution from our students' families. Without generous financial support, this project could not continue.

Our school was formed with Christ as its foundation and purpose. Many of our students come from non-believing or nominally Catholic families, with little or no knowledge of the Gospel. Additionally, while we always seek to hire competent and compassionate teachers, not all of our teachers are Christians due to a lack of certified Christian teachers available. Our Magdalena community; government officials, school supervisors, neighbors, and ordinary townspeople, desperately need to hear about Christ and experience His love. These realities offer abundant opportunities for biblical truth to take root in the hearts of the students and families we serve, the teachers we employ, and the watching community via our speech and example. Please pray that God will be magnified, Christ preached, and the fruit of the Spirit made evident because of Colegio Verdad y Vida.
